Flatware Sizing
What is the difference between American, Euro, and Liberty sizing?
In the flatware industry, sizing refers to the overall length, weight, and feel of the utensils in your hand. Liberty Tabletop offers patterns in three distinct sizing styles to accommodate different preferences and dining traditions.
| Sizing Standard | Typical Dinner Fork Length |
|---|---|
| American Sizing | Approximately 7¼ inches |
| Liberty Sizing | Between American and Euro sizing |
| Euro Sizing | Approximately 8 to 8¼ inches |
American Sizing
Also known as traditional or colonial sizing, American-sized flatware features smaller, lighter, and more delicate proportions. A typical American-sized dinner fork measures approximately 7¼ inches long. These patterns are comfortable for those who prefer a lighter-weight utensil and traditional styling.
Liberty Sizing
Liberty sizing is exclusive to Liberty Tabletop and was developed to provide a balanced alternative between traditional American sizing and larger Euro sizing. Liberty-sized flatware falls between the two standards in overall length and weight, combining the elegance of traditional flatware with the substantial feel of contemporary designs.
Euro Sizing
Euro-sized flatware is larger, heavier, and more substantial in both appearance and feel. A typical Euro-sized dinner fork measures approximately 8 to 8¼ inches long and is noticeably wider across the tines. Euro sizing offers a bold profile and heavier weight preferred by many modern diners.
Because sizing is a personal preference, we encourage customers to order samples or contact our Customer Service team for assistance selecting the size that best fits their needs.
Materials & Manufacturing
What is 18/10 stainless steel?
18/10 stainless steel contains approximately 18% chromium and 10% nickel. This combination provides excellent corrosion resistance, durability, shine, and long-term performance.
Where does your stainless steel come from?
We purchase stainless steel from American steel mills and require that it be melted in the United States.
What is the difference between your quality lines?
All Liberty Tabletop flatware is manufactured from the same premium 18/10 stainless steel. As you move through our quality lines, the gauge (thickness) of the steel increases, pattern designs become more intricate, and finishing processes become more refined. Our premium lines feature a five-star finish, representing the highest level of craftsmanship and polish.
What is the difference between silverware and flatware?
While the terms are often used interchangeably, flatware generally refers to stainless steel utensils designed for everyday use and dishwasher cleaning. Silverware traditionally refers to silver or silver-plated utensils that require more specialized care and maintenance.

Product Information
What is Open Stock?
Open stock means individual pieces can be purchased separately. This allows customers to replace lost items, add serving pieces, or expand existing collections over time.
What is the difference between dinner knives and steak knives?
Steak knives feature deeper serrations designed specifically for cutting meats. Dinner knives have a finer edge suitable for everyday dining.
What is the difference between Hollow Handle and Solid Handle Knives?
Liberty Tabletop offers both hollow handle and solid handle knife options. While both provide excellent performance and durability, they differ in construction, weight, balance, and feel.
Hollow Handle Knives
Construction:
Hollow handle knives are crafted from two half shells of premium 18/10 stainless steel that are joined together. The hollow center is filled with a lightweight resin or cement that securely anchors the blade while providing proper balance.
Weight & Balance:
Typically weighing approximately 2.7–2.8 ounces, hollow handle knives are lighter in overall weight. Their weight distribution is centered toward the middle and rear of the knife, creating exceptional balance during use.
Comfort & Grip:
The larger handle circumference provides a comfortable grip and is often preferred by those who enjoy a substantial handle without excessive weight.
Blade:
Each knife features a hardened serrated blade, typically manufactured from 410 stainless steel, offering excellent cutting performance and edge retention.
Solid Handle Knives
Construction:
Solid handle knives are forged from a single piece of stainless steel, typically hardened 410 stainless steel. Because they are one continuous piece of metal, there are no seams, solder joints, fillers, or connecting materials.
Weight & Balance:
Solid handle knives typically weigh approximately 4.0–4.1 ounces, giving them a noticeably heavier and sturdier feel in the hand. The balance is shifted more toward the handle, creating a substantial dining experience.
Durability:
Because the knife is forged from one solid piece of metal, it is exceptionally strong and highly resistant to damage. There are no hollow cavities or internal materials that could fail over time.
Profile:
To maintain comfort and balance, solid handle knives feature a slightly smaller handle circumference than hollow handle knives.
Which knife style is better?
Neither style is inherently better—it comes down to personal preference.
- Choose hollow handle knives if you prefer a lighter knife with exceptional balance and a larger, more comfortable grip.
- Choose solid handle knives if you prefer a heavier, forged knife with maximum durability and a substantial feel in the hand.
Both styles are proudly manufactured in the USA and designed to provide years of reliable everyday use.
Do you offer soup spoons in all patterns?
Soup spoons are available in most Liberty Tabletop patterns and are generally sold in sets of four.
Is the dessert knife different from the butter knife?
Yes. The dessert knife is a smaller hollow handle knife designed for desserts and formal place settings. It differs in size and construction from a butter knife.
Is the salad fork different from the dessert fork?
The same fork may serve both purposes depending on how the table is set. Formal place settings often use one fork for salad and another for dessert service.

Care & Maintenance
Is Liberty Tabletop flatware dishwasher safe?
Yes. Liberty Tabletop flatware is designed for everyday use and is dishwasher safe.
We recommend rinsing flatware after use and avoiding detergents that contain chlorine or citrus additives.
What is the black residue occasionally found on new flatware?
The black residue is typically a harmless polishing compound remaining from the final finishing process. It can be removed by soaking the flatware in warm, soapy water for 15–20 minutes and washing normally.
What if I have well water?
Minerals in well water can sometimes leave spotting on stainless steel. We recommend drying flatware promptly after washing.
Why do stains or discoloration occur on stainless steel?
Tea, coffee, vinegar, salad dressings, salt, hard water, and mineral deposits can occasionally cause discoloration or spotting on stainless steel surfaces.
How do I remove stains?
A quality stainless steel cleaner such as Bar Keepers Friend is typically effective at removing mineral buildup and restoring shine.

What is your return policy?
Unused products may be returned within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. Products must be returned in their original packaging.
