The product is amazing for several reasons. First, this is beefy plate ware, with bottom rims that almost match in size to the perimeter of the top edge of the plate. This is important because in the past we’ve bought dinnerware where the “bottom edge” of the plate is in like a four inch diameter center to the entire plate, and when you go to cut or fork food on the edges, the plate tilts and becomes unstable. Second, the design of the perpendicular rim allows for “blocking” of food onto your spoon or fork, without using a knife or chasing the food to the edge of the plate in an attempt to scoop it up. You essentially trap the food against the side of the plate rim and can retrieve it. Finally, the black color matte nicely shows off the food. Cool color. Even though I rated this 5 stars because of how awesome the product is, there are some idiosyncrasies unique to the design. With the perpendicular, rather than “edged” plate rim, we had to use the extension feature of our dishwasher rack, because instead of a typical 1/8″ plate rim, you are now inserting a plate into the rack that now has a 1-1/4″ angled edge. If your dishwasher rack is not adjustable, you may have an issue loading the dishes in an efficient manner in your dishwasher. Further, since the plate has a 90 degree bend on the rim, the dishwasher at the end of its cycle will have water accumulate in the angled area between the plate and rim, and cannot effectively evaporate the remaining water or condensation, even if you use a drying additive (i.e. Finish drying liquid). My last comment concerns the thrown clay color of the set itself. It is an underlying cream white color, which, if the plate is ever chipped, I’m assuming that white will show very starkly against the black matte finish. If the manufacturer threw the clay in a gray color, if/when a plate chips, at least it will not be quite as obvious that there is a imperfection to the item. We do this in painting exterior automotive parts, where if the topcoat paint is green, we mold the underlying product in a close color, so that chips or dents are difficult to discern if that occurs. Regardless, we love the set, and would never go back to non-perpendicular edged plates or bowls ever again!
