What is the difference between silverware and flatware?

Both are used pretty much interchangeable in our modern world. That being said there are technically differences between the two. This is why here at Liberty Tabletop we refer to the products we manufacture as flatware. Confused? Allow us to explain:

Flatware and silverware have different requirements when it comes to maintenance and care. Flatware is made to handle the wear and tear of being used, washed, and stashed in a drawer on a daily basis. Flatware can be hand washed or sent through the dishwasher.

Silverware on the other hand, because it is made of silver or silver plated, requires a bit more care than flatware. Most manufacturers of authentic silverware will recommend washing each piece in warm water with a mild soap and non-abrasive cloth or sponge. If you want to preserve the shine of your silverware, it should never be loaded into the dishwasher. Many people will invest in a wooden storage box with an interior of soft material to store silverware pieces when not in use.

If you are setting a formal table, you would put one next to the plate for salad and one at the top of the plate for dessert (along with the dessert knife). If not setting a formal table, it is handy to have the extra forks for dessert so that you aren’t washing them between courses.
