What's the difference between Solid Handle and Hollow Handle Dinner Knives?

In the end it all comes down to personal preference.  Both versions of knives made here at Liberty Tabletop are designed to be high quality, corrosion resistant, and will last a lifetime.  Here are a few factors that might help you make the choice that is right for you and your family.

First, a little background on the manufacturing process.  Our forged knives, also known as solid knives, are made from a solid piece of 410 stainless steel rod.  We use 410 because it can be fully hardened after the knife is formed allowing for a thin elegant and functional blade that will not bend as it is strengthened by the hardening process.  The blades for the hollow handles are made the same way, out of a forged rod using type 410 stainless steel, then hardened in the same furnace.  Enter the difference.  Hollow handle knives are produced in the tradition of fine sterling dating back to the 1800’s.  Many times hollow handles are associated with “bridal quality” flatware. The hollow handle knives are actually a three-piece construction where the forged knife blade is married with a two-piece hollow handle made from 18-10 stainless steel.  The two half shells are formed in an auto press, braised together in a furnace, finished bright and then united with the blade using a specialized resin/cement.  Now for the differences that will lead you to the knife that is best for you:

Weight:  The most notable difference in the two versions of our knives is the weight.  Because the solid knives have solid stainless steel handles, they are heavier than the hollow handle knives which are made with a thin stainless steel wall filled with a lighter material which is the resin that holds them together.

Balance and ergonomics:  The hollow handle knives have a larger diameter handle which is ergonomically pleasing as it is easier to grab and can be larger without creating an unbalanced piece.  The solid knife handle is smaller in circumference, otherwise it would be too heavy.

Corrosion resistance:  Both the solid knives and the blades of the hollow handle knives are made from type 410 stainless.  As stated before,  this grade is used as it can be hardened where 18-10 stainless, used to make the handles, forks and spoons, can not be hardened and would be too soft for a blade application.  The key to making 410 corrosion resistant is removing the forge scale, polishing it to a mirror finish and making sure that it is fully hard.  These key processes are all accomplished in our manufacturing process to ensure that you have flatware that will last a lifetime with maximum corrosion resistance.

Durability: A solid handle knife will never separate where a hollow handle knife occasionally (though rarely) might.  In most cases this is due to misuse, “I can’t find a screwdriver or a pry bar so hand me that knife”. To give you peace of mind in the unlikely event that a hollow handle might separate we offer a 25 year warranty to cover such incidents, effectively removing this as a consideration in your decision making process.
