The three appetizer recipes I’m sharing with you this year are delicious and traditional to our family and for that reason alone I keep making them. Food is comfort and this year we can all use some comfort. In our home Holidays that have large dinners usually start with an easy breakfast and then instead of lunch a large spread of hearty appetizers to hold everyone over till dinner. So a great assortment of small bites of deliciousness is essential to tie over a hungry circus. But, who wants to be standing over a stove making appetizers when your also making a huge holiday dinner?! Not this girl!. The appetizer recipes I’m sharing can and should be made ahead of time. Flavors will develop as they rest in the fridge and your stress level will decrease knowing you have already made the appetizers. LOL.

I hope you enjoy making and serving these appetizers as much as I do. Happy Holidays.

From my kitchen to yours,

~ Andrea

sausage rolls

3. EASY SAUSAGE ROLL: Did you say sausage roll Andrea? Yes, yes I did! This is a year round go to appetizer and for a Holiday spread its no different. Well, the fillings are always changing and that’s the best part. Let your creativity fly with this one. Want to use sausage one day and buffalo chicken the next? Sure! Its a go to appetizer that regardless of the filling is sure to be a crowd pleaser. This easy sausage roll uses store-bought pizza dough because lets be real, these are supposed to be EASY appetizers. Sure, you could make your own pizza dough for this and it will be amazing but store bought is perfectly fine for a recipe like this. Any time I make this eyes light up but to be alarmed with its the first to go from the app table. You might want to make two for a larger crowd.

EASY SAUSAGE ROLL RECIPE:

  • 1 bag pizza dough
  • 1 lb ground sausage
  • 1 -2 C. Shredded Mozzarella
  • 1 C. Sliced Peperoni or salami
  • 2 Medium sized yellow onions (sliced and caramelized)
  • 1 T garlic powder
  • 2 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. pepper
  • 2 T. Dried Parsley
  • 2 T Olive oil

Pre-heat oven to 400F. Sauté onion slices in 1 T of olive oil on medium to low heat until tender. Stirring often. If browning too quickly turn down the heat. Low and Slow is best. Remove from sauté pan and set aside to cool. Next, brown sausage on the stove until fully cooked, drain excess oil. Lightly oil a baking sheet and spread pizza dough out in a rectangle as if you are making pizza. Spread sausage, cheese, onions, peperoni and seasonings over top. Roll up dough (similar to cinnamon buns) and tuck the seam on the bottom. Using a sharp knife slice air vents on top to allow steam to escape. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder and salt to taste. Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool, slice and serve alongside marinara sauce for dipping.
