September holds a special place in our hearts at Liberty Tabletop - it’s the month we celebrate the adoption anniversary of Oliver, our beloved office pup and the inspiration behind our Oliver flatware pattern!

Oliver was rescued two years ago on September 1st from Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society in Utica, NY. A silly and handsome American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pit Bull mix, he quickly stole the hearts of our co-owner Matt Roberts and his wife, Alice. From the moment Alice saw him and gave him belly rubs, she knew he was the one! Since then, Oliver has filled their lives with joy and has become an important part of our Liberty Tabletop family, too.

Oliver’s story inspired us to create the Oliver flatware pattern, part of our “Affinity” collection of one-of-a-kind designs that celebrate the passions and connections that mean the most to us. Like all of our patterns, Oliver is crafted from 18/10 stainless steel and proudly made in the USA.

Because Oliver is a rescue, we wanted his namesake pattern to give back to animals still waiting for their forever homes. That’s why a portion of every Oliver flatware purchase helps support animal shelters and rescues. This September, in honor of his adoption anniversary, we directed our support to Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society, the very shelter that brought Oliver into our lives.

We were also proud to join forces with Mohawk Valley Gives, the region’s largest day of community giving, to help amplify our impact. Together, these efforts provide much-needed support for current and future rescues, carrying Oliver’s legacy of love forward.

Oliver may have been the inspiration for a flatware pattern, but more importantly, he’s a reminder of the joy rescue animals bring—and the difference we can make when we give them a second chance.

When most people want a guitar, they head to the store and buy one. But for Kris Roberts, a Machinist and Toolmaker at Liberty Tabletop who spends his days crafting precision tools for flatware design, the answer was clear — build it himself.

Kris joined Liberty Tabletop in 2019 with a strong interest in design and manufacturing. Early on much of his work was done by hand but over time, he began exploring new technologies like CNC machining. A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) mill is a computer-guided tool used to shape materials with incredible precision, and it’s now a core part of Liberty Tabletop’s in-house process for creating striking tools that imprint each flatware pattern.

That same precision and creativity followed Kris home, where inspiration struck after he saw a video on social media of someone building an electric guitar from scratch. A casual guitar player himself, Kris was immediately hooked on the idea of creating one of his own. Even more exciting? The opportunity to work with wood — a material that intrigued him thanks to a childhood spent watching his father, a contractor, bring wooden structures to life.

At the same time, Kris had the chance to acquire his own CNC machine — and he jumped at it. The guitar would become his first major project using the new equipment, blending his day-job skills with a personal passion.

He began by designing the guitar’s shape from scratch, digitally sketching the body style using modeling software. “I started by exploring different body styles, adjusting the outline until I found something that felt right,” he explained. Though it was a new kind of project, Kris wasn’t starting from square one. He’d been experimenting with 3D modeling since 2013, using a home 3D printer to bring ideas to life.

The guitar build is no small feat. Kris said it took around 200 hours to complete his first guitar build, from crafting the wooden body to handling the electronics and soldering tiny components into place. Still, he’s all in, “the guitar will be made completely by me from start to finish.”

And all in he was as what started as a single guitar build quickly became a dual project – two electric guitars! His first build was a dark top 6-string guitar which he named “Ritescar.” According to Kris, this is a symbolic name that suggests a rite of passage marked by effort, scars, and growth-both creative and physical.” The guitar is crafted from Rosewood and Hard Maple.

The second guitar is an eight string dubbed the “The Headless Horseman.” He said the name comes from the lack of a headstock. According to Kris, he designed the guitar this way, "because you tune the strings at the base of the body instead of the headstock." The Headless Horseman is crafted from hard maple, black walnut, cherry, and padauk.

It’s hard not to choose favorites when you hand crafted both guitars, but Kris said that “The Headless Horseman,” is flawless! “It’s an amazingly well playing instrument I can be very proud of.”

Kris also decided to make the second guitar an 8-string with an extended range, as he says it opens a world of creative possibilities for guitarists. “The extra strings allow for access to lower tonalities, broader chord voicings, and unique tunings, ultimately expanding the guitarist's creative palette,” said Kris. “In all honesty the actual reason [for creating the guitar] was the challenge. I wanted to challenge my limits both as a musician and as a machinist!”

For Kris, the journey of building this guitar has deepened his understanding of design and modeling — lessons that translate just as well to working with stainless steel as they do to shaping wood. It’s a true testament to the kind of innovation and passion Liberty Tabletop is proud to support, both inside and outside the workshop.

Sherrill Manufacturing recently marked a major milestone—its 20th anniversary! The celebration brought together employees, vendors, and everyone who has played a role in the company’s success. And, of course, there was cake!

A Look Back: The Journey of Sherrill Manufacturing

The company was founded on March 21, 2005, at a critical time when Oneida Limited was preparing to shut down its operations. At that time, Matt Roberts, now co-owner and president of Sherrill Manufacturing, was managing the factory in Sherrill, NY. Meanwhile, Greg Owens, co-owner and CEO, was working for a steel mill company in Mexico, having previously managed a factory in Toluca, Mexico. With extensive experience in flatware manufacturing, particularly within Oneida Limited, Matt and Greg saw an opportunity to continue the craft in Sherrill.

During the anniversary ceremony, Matt reflected on their bold decision: “At the time, we didn’t know if we were the dumbest or the smartest people in the world.” Their leap of faith led to the birth of Sherrill Manufacturing, securing jobs and preserving American-made flatware production.

Overcoming Challenges and Building a Legacy

When Oneida Limited began winding down operations, the factory had no incoming purchase orders. But Matt and Greg’s determination changed everything. They acquired the factory and reached an agreement to continue manufacturing flatware for Oneida Limited under Sherrill Manufacturing. However, at that time, they were restricted from creating their own brand.

In 2007, after Oneida Limited pulled its contract and ceased U.S. production, Sherrill Manufacturing pivoted to government contracts, supplying high-quality flatware to the U.S. government. This shift helped sustain and grow the company.

The Birth of Liberty Tabletop

In 2011, Sherrill Manufacturing launched Liberty Tabletop, its own brand of high-quality, American-made flatware. Today, Liberty Tabletop offers 18/10 stainless steel flatware in over 40 unique patterns, ranging from traditional to modern styles. The Oliver flatware pattern is here and we’re just as excited as the tail-wagging furry friend that inspired the design!

Oliver is the proud pup of our co-owner Matt Roberts and his wife Alice Roberts, who are Liberty Tabletop team members. Alice couldn’t get enough of her grand fur babies, and she knew how happy they became after being rescued. That’s when they decided it was time to expand the fur family! Oliver, an American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Mix is a rescue from Anita’s Steven Swan Human Society. Once he was spotted it was love at first sight! Oliver acclimated very well into his new home and even work! Oliver's now a staple at the Liberty Tabletop office. His favorite spot is under his Dad's desk, which you can see in the photo below! He's always excited to see people and receive as many belly rubs as possible. Oliver also has a brother named Duke, a Miniature Pincher Manchester Terrier who was rescued 12 years ago from Helping Hounds in Syracuse. Duke is a big fan of coming to work and avidly begs his mom and dad for trips through the factory.

At Liberty Tabletop, we're huge dog lovers! With all the love we have for pups, we thought, why not create a flatware pattern that honors our favorite four-legged friends? When you think of Liberty Tabletop you may believe that our primary focus is on flatware, but things go much deeper than just forks and spoons. We put a lot of thought into our community and how we can give back to support those in the area. Liberty Tabletop has sponsored the Oneida Community Mansion House Music Series for years. This series features several artists annually showcasing musical talents for the local community. Each musical act is always a pleasure to watch; the most recent one was no exception!

The sweet sound of folk music filled the Great Hall with delight for another Oneida Community Mansion House Music Series event, thanks to Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light.

Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light is a trio fresh off a first-place win at the 2023 Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival Band Competition. With the blended sound of bluegrass, folk, and Americana, the music group gave way to a captivating performance that some describe as TV’s show’s The Voice worthy!

The trio is comprised of Lennon Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Rachel Sumner, singer and fiddle player Kat Wallace, and upright bass player Mike Siegel. Sumner who is also no stranger to the mansion house stage made her return for the performance. During the show the trio performed many of their hits including one written by Sumner that won the 2021 John Lennon Songwriter Contest. “Radium Girls (Curie Eleison),” tells the true story of the women who worked in factories painting radium on watches during the early 1900’s.
