The Economic Impact of Manufacturing in NYS

Flatware Manufacturer Supports U.S. Economy; Provides Employment in Hard-hit Part of NYS

When Oneida Ltd. moved their operations outside of the United States; the manufacturing facility in Sherrill, N.Y. was threatened with closure. After being purchased by former employees, the facility became the home of Sherrill Manufacturing, producers of Liberty Tabletop flatware and home products. While the small company floundered at first, it quickly found a foothold with direct sales, and today, Liberty Tabletop is growing as one of the most respected Made in America companies in the U.S. Their workforce has grown exponentially over the past few years, and they have garnered the attention of such television programs as Discovery Channel’s “How It’s Made” and “The Today Show” on NBC.

At a time when the economy of New York State is often one of concern, we believe the Liberty Tabletop story is an important one. Not only does it provide a fine example of how one business rebounded from outsourcing to become a leader in the manufacturing field; it also encourages other small businesses that are struggling to maintain their competitiveness in the current economic landscape. Liberty Tabletop provides the perfect illustration of a “Made in the U.S. A.” business succeeding, providing local employment, and helping to boost the New York State economy.
